Mirko Schäfer (1974) is Associate Professor at the University of Utrecht for new media and digital culture. He researches the interplay between technology and society, is curator of the Impakt Festival and is head of the SetUp media lab based in Utrecht. In addition to his own publications, Schäfer was co-editor of The Datafield Society. Studying Culture through Data, which takes a critical look at the role and use of big data, in 2017. In the mini-lecture that Mirko Schäfer will be holding at the ILFU Humanities Night, he will discuss power structures and big data (citizens vs government, consumers vs companies, EU vs US and China and ultimately, people vs algorithms).
