Rob van Essen (1963) made his debut in 1996 with his novel Reddend Zwemmen (Bezige Bij, 1996), which showcased his ironic and absurd style. Van Essen released nine books in the years that followed, of which Hier wonen ook mensen (Atlas Contact, 2014) won the first J.M.A. Biesheuvel Prize for the best short story collection. Since 2007, he has been working as an English literature critic for the NRC Handelsblad newspaper. At the ILFU, Van Essen will be the book club leader for Juffrouw Jane by Brad Watson, a novel he enthusiastically praised in NRC Handelsblad.
