Utrecht Book Market
Books at the Vredenburg
- This event has passed.
Finally, a big book market in the heart of Utrecht! On Sunday 16 September, the ILFU is organising the first edition of the Utrecht Book Market as part of the Utrecht Uitfeest. Around 150 stalls will be popping up right in the heart of the city at Vredenburg Square, adjacent to Hoog Catharijne. What’s more, the Book Market will extend right into TivoliVredenburg. There, an extensive literary and musical programme for young and old will be taking place all afternoon.
But let’s not forget the morning! De Literaire Karavaan will be presenting super short bookrecitals at 10:15 and 11:15. The seven writers that will be reading from their own work are Ru de Groen, Chris Polanen, Sandra and Hella Rottenberg, Patrica Snel, Patty Stenger and Etchica Voorn, joined by guitarplayer Casper de Groen.
At the end of 2017, Utrecht was appointed UNESCO City of Literature, a culmination of a rich literary tradition spanning 1300 years. As such, Utrecht joined a select international society of 28 cities, all with a lively literary climate. After Utrecht was appointed UNESCO City of Literature, various parties got together to give the city an annual antiquarian book market. These include The House of Literature, Utrecht Marketing, the Association of Independent Publishers (VZU) and the Association of Traders in Old Books (BOB). Hopefully, this will be the start of a wonderful tradition.
