YALFU: Young Adult @ ILFU
With Becky Albertalli a.o.
- This event has passed.
Literature is everywhere. In books, Netflix series, music, theatre and film. Becky Albertalli (1982) proves that a book can be a perfect starting point for a film. She made her debut in 2015 with Simon vs de verwachtingen van de wereld [Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda] (Blossom Books), which was successfully turned into the film Love, Simon this year. Today, Becky Albertalli will be performing during the ILFU in a programme featuring various Young Adult authors, book stalls and, of course, goodies!
Becky Albertalli‘s story about Simon Spier and how he came out of the closet has become the talk of the town. Without a doubt, Simon is one of the most influential YA books of recent times. After Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, book two followed: De voordelen van onbeantwoorde liefde [The Upside of Unrequited] (Blossom Books, 2017). The recently published De eigenzinningheden van Leah Burke [Leah on the Offbeat] (Blossom Books, 2018) forms the third – and final – part in the universe that’s called Simonverse.
Becky Albertalli had trouble saying goodbye to the characters: ‘I’m devastated that this is the end of the story’. All the more reason to create a real Simonverse in Utrecht, for the ILFU, with Simon, Nick, Blue and Leah in the main role.
Also the popular writing pilot Buddy Tegenbosch is present at YALFU. The successful youth novels Pokerface (Van Goor, 2012), Oog om oog (Van Goor, 2015) and Livestream (Van Goor, 2017) are from his hand. In all three the main character is a boy and for two of these novels he created a special booktrailer. Livestream brought him and Martijn van de Griendt to New York, where they found themselves in the exact same situation as his main characters: 20 hours in Manhattan.
Tiny Fischer and Sophie Pluim will be on stage with their modern version of Romeo and Juliet. Tiny Fischer rewrote Shakespeare’s world-famous classic into a clear and comprehensible text. Sophie Pluim added beautiful illustrations to the lovestory, in an appropriate classic style.
Our fifth guest is Erna Sassen. This year her Young Adult-novel Dit is geen dagboek (Leopold, 2009) was brought to the theaters ánd was her newest book, Er is geen vorm waarin ik pas (Leopold, 2016), nominated for the Gouden Lijst 2018! We are more than happy to welcome her at YALFU.
From Great-Britain we have Hayley Barker joining, author of the immensely populair Showstopper (Scholastic, 2017) and a big Young Adult-fan herself. The dangerous circus-world she created reminds us of the bestselling Hungergames-series. Luckily part two will already hit the shelfs this fall!
Last, but not least: Margje Woodrow. For years she was an elementary school teacher, and now she is the celebrated author of four youth thrillers, with the fifth on its way. Her latest book, Snitch (De Fontein, 2018), covers a friendship that lasted for years but failed to follow through. Can you forgive a friend that ha betrayed you? And who can be trusted? Margje Woodrow is inspired by sad, funny and touching situations from her own life.
The presentation of YALFU will be done by no other than Edward van de Vendel.
Besides the authors you can find all kinds of stalls around the venue; Till & Dil, Dutch Venture Publishing, Juni Jars, Proud BookJunk, Romemadecandles, Godijn Publishing, Hebban, Boox and Letters & Lights.
